While jumping can be the most thrilling part of this sport, it is also the most dangerous. Deaths are common when trying this without experience. I've been riding since age three and I wouldn't even think about doing this! According to my text, [picture above] "twenty years ago most people would have said this was [would be] a horrific motocross wreck. Nowadays, stunts like these are commonplace with motocross [riders] (Casper 35). Despite how terrifying this trick looks, it is just a basic compared to some of the other things riders try. For example: a quadruple backflip sixty feet up in the air.
I would post pictures of myself trying these tricks, but sadly, I don't have immediate access to a professional motocross track. I would be taking a huge gamble to try them at home with my current equipment and riding location.
With recent technological advances, riders can now do a full on superman dive, letting go of their bike for several seconds before getting back on, all in one jump (Casper 43). Moving back to my previous discussion, this is another trick that appears to defy logic in motocross. Some riders even perform this trick in the middle of a race.
Lastly, contradicting what I had said before, don't be a showoff. The last thing you want is to get overconfident and end up six feet underground, rather than fifteen feet over it. It's ok to be a bit more skilled at something than someone else, but don't try something that you aren't 100% about doing and that can threaten your life. The most important part is that you only have one, so don't do something you know you don't know how to do, because that one chance could blow up in your face and go up in smoke.
Question To Make You Think: Have you ever had a time where you felt like you needed to show off and you ended up embarrassed because you messed it up?
