Foot work

Pivoting is the most common thing to do when you pick up the ball and can't dribble anymore. But for me I fail to do it, because when I pivot, I sometimes fall or travel. But by following these steps, I can almost guarantee you that you won't fall or have a travel. Pivoting can help you with a lot of stuff. " Pivoting away from your defensive pressure, use your body to protect the ball, or to improve a passing angle to a teammate" (26).

As you can see in the image, when you pick up the ball and can't dribble anymore you have to pivot to pass it to your teammate. which ever leg you like pivoting on, For an example I pivot with my right foot. So while pivoting with my right foot I'm rotating it while it being on the ground, but same as the left foot it's rotating but it's not as stable or on the ground as the right foot." stay of your heel! pivoting on your heel is a sure way to get your legs all twisted up to invite traveling violations" (27). also while pivoting have your knees bent for balance and agility. your able to freely move your left foot, instead of it being pressed on the floor.

this shows the right foot rotating on the ground, and the left foot rotating but not on the ground.

When you pivot, do you ever have trouble staying stable and balance?

  1. Hi Sharon! I don't play basketball but in figure skating we also pivot to turn before we do spins and jumps. Whenever I turn or pivot I always lose balance and have trouble staying stable. My arms start to become untucked from the previous position and I begin to lose balance and cannot perform the spin or jump. As I worked on pivoting more I learned that bending my knees help with my balance like you stand above in your blog post. Another trick I learned when trying to maintain balance when pivoting it bending forward slightly.

  2. Thanks Eliza! thanks for the suggestion, and I will try to do that next time. Like I said in my blog post I also lose balance If im standing straight. But i feel like if I bend my knees im more stable and steady.

  3. I really like this blog of yours because it reminds me of when I used to play basketball years agooo! I remember I always had a hard time pivoting because I always had the urge to just keep running. This really brings back memories and I wish i had this to read earlier haha.
