Art Applies: Motion and Lettering (Jaipal Cheema)

Over time, I am progressing further and further into "The Usborne Complete Book of Drawing" by Usborne. The book at this point is get
ting more complex with the development of artistic ideas, which were quite simple up to this specific point. By no means, am I saying that it's getting too hard, but it's actually a great thing to see many techniques coming together to form one full image.

In this update, the overall focus is on the construction of typical cartoon characters. The overall process is quite simple  as it deals with just proportions and human features. However, the book introduces the pairing of cartoon characters with motion, and lettering. The process starts with the drawing of a cartoon character, then adding any motion which you want to show. Lastly, the important part is to make sure the text lettering correlates with the action taking place. For example, if the character is sprinting, the text should associate with speed and the character going fast. The book pairs this motion with the word "zoom" In the text it states "Any person or situation can be turned into a cartoon, as shown by the examples on this page"(Usborn 15). The bigger message being shown by the quote is that a image does not need to be still, for it to be visually appealing. You can use the techniques mentioned to make a situation with motion look visually attractive and realistic. The book shows an example, which I redrew to better understand the technique.

Question: When doing something, do you incorporate minute techniques to help you be successful?

  1. Hey Jaipal!
To answer your question, one thing I do that requires lots of detail is music. I play two instruments, the piano and the alto saxophone. Detail is very important when you want to play a piece expressively to make the piece more interesting and better sounding. Also, I did drawing as my topic for this project too, but I focused on more realistic drawings. It was very interesting to see someone else's take on a very different style of the same activity I did. Nice job on your drawing and post!
