On the right and left are examples of textures and variations of lines shown in Playing with Sketches. To complete this exercise, I used some of the patterns shown in the book to make unique characters.
Sherman states, "You will have the endurance to maintain a consistent line quality and the flexibility to easily change your line work, bringing variety to your image," (24). Overall, this exercise was simple and fun. Those who want to add variety to there artwork should try incorporating line variation.
Do you think using different line textures/variation makes art more interesting?
Bicknell, Sarah. Sherman, Whitney. Playing with Sketches. Beverly, Rockport Publishers, 2014.
Yes, especially in the sketches you have done above. Each character looks so different just based on changing up the lines.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms.Robison, I think that using line variation definitely makes variation and can mix up your artwork.
DeleteHi Sarah! I think that the variations in the lines make art more interesting, as well as give of a different feeling. For example, the drawing in the bottom right corner of the last picture gives of a vibe that says the person is delicate, while the one above it, with the straight lines, gives off a vibe that says the person is very serious.
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie! Interesting observations, I agree with what you mean. Although I had not drawn the characters with that intent, I definitely see what you mean.
DeleteHaving only one kind of line in art is majorly boring. Having different line types make the art feel more real and differentiates the different parts. the different lines could also give off different emotions and such. You did a great job with your drawings. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dani! I agree, drawing with one basic line style can be very boring. For example, if an artist uses thin lines in all of there work it may be boring, however if an artist uses a brush pen (which gives line variation), they may have more alive artwork.
DeleteYes, variations in lines makes art more interesting as well as gives your art work depth. When you different lines, like your example above, makes each part have more personality, gives a different look, and makes each part unique; rather than having one type of line which would get boring.
ReplyDeleteThank you Milan, I agree with what you are saying. Each of the characters look slightly alive and as if they have there very own personality just because of the lines.
