First off, I am going to explain what the "diet fads" and the other do not's when it comes to eating for that perfect body. There are many diet names such as The South Beach Diet, The Paleo Diet, The Hollywood Diet, and the Atkins Diet. All of these diets rely on the myth "Work out hard and eat less to get the perfect body". But the truth is, if you want to gain muscle mass and get a perfect body you have to understand the idea that, Muscles will grow only if they're properly fed. As Michael Matthews explains that eating less, and eliminating many food categories will not help you become bigger, leaner, and stronger. Like i mentioned earlier, for your muscles to grow, you need to properly feed them. Mathews explains this as, "According to the laws of physics underlying this principle. If you give your body a bit more energy than it burns every day, a portion of the excess energy is stored as body fat, and thus you gain weight slowly. If you give your body a bit less energy than it burns everyday, it will tap into fat stores to get the additional energy it needs, leaving you a bit lighter." (32). This quote basically explains that if you burn a certain amount of energy each day and eat a little less than that amount you will sufficiently lose weight. But, to do this you need to eat very well including lots of proteins (including protein shakes) which will also help you gain muscle mass.
For me personally, I have not falling for any of these "Diet Fads", but that does not mean I have dieted properly. I have always had a very high metabolism and a very high BMR. Which means my body burns a high number of calories each day. So naturally I have always been very lean, defined and muscular. Now, I am trying to put on some muscle mass. These tips that Michael Matthews has explained have been very helpful.
Do you eat correctly? Also do you see results in using protein powder?
Matthews, Michael. Bigger Leaner Stronger: the Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body. Oculus Media Group Llc, 2015.
Hey Kyler, I can also relate to having a high metabolism, it can be very hard and frustrating to gain weight sometimes. But anyways, I have a question, is it necessary to bulk?
ReplyDeleteIt depends what your final goal is, for me I like to eat lots of proteins to gain muscle mass and weight. But if you want to stay lean and muscular, bulking is not needed or recommended.
DeleteMake certain to include an open-ended question with your post in order to facilitate discussion. I am wondering: have you seen an increase in muscle mass since using protein powder? I use protein powder occasionally, mostly to supplement a vegetarian diet, but have never seen much increase in muscle mass (I do workout) as a result of this. Are there some protein powders that are better than others? Have you tried different ones? How are they working?
ReplyDeleteThank your for reminding me about the open ended question, I revised my post and added it in. But to answer your question, yes I have seen results in using protein powder. Ever since I have been using protein powder and working out consistently (around 2 and a half months ago) I have gained significant amount of definition and have put on 6 pounds of muscle.
DeleteNice post Kyler, At the end of your post i noticed the question you asked and i would like to say also as an athlete you always want to eat healthy. and in my experience sometimes it doesn't always happen but i always try my best and your post is giving different viewpoints on how to always make sure of that. Maybe next time i will try protein powder.
ReplyDeletenice job,

Thank you Hannah, I also sometimes have a hard time sticking to eating healthy. But Michael Matthews explains in his book that you should stick to a diet that is easiest for you, and is easy to stick to. You shouldn't be trying these very difficult diets because you will not be able to stick to it.
