Find Joy in Cookies

WHO DOESN'T LIKE COOKIES? In my opinion, the smell of cookies is one of life's most satisfying pleasures! However, this blog will not be about how to bake cookies. I will be providing information on storing and packaging cookies.

Storing Cookies:
Cookies are very easy and traditional recipe to make. However, what do we do with the leftovers? You store them. This is how: "Plastic storage containers and seal-able plastic bags keep cookies airtight" (Becker and Rombeaur 815). However, as long as their lids fit tightly, old-fashioned cookie tins do the job nicely.

Although there is one thing that you must not do: "Never store cookies in any kind of container until they have completely cooled" (Becker and Rombeaur 815). Warm cookies produce steam, which will cause the entire batch to soften, and eventually to spoil. Cookies can generally be stored at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks. Cookies that are sprinkled with or rolled in sugar, or that are to be frosted or glazed, should be frozen without these enhancements. Allow them to defrost completely before sugar coating, glazing, or frosting.

Packaging Cookies for Shipping:
Oftentimes, the best choices are small and medium cookies, at least 1/4 inch think and firm in consistency. An alternative is softer, brownies, blondies, and other bar cookies also usually ship well-with the exception of bars with sticky fillings or icings. "More delicate varieties can also be mailed successfully if they are packed carefully in tins or tough plastic boxes with plenty of crumpled wax or parchment paper added to keep them from jostling each other" (Becker and Rombeaur 815). After placing the cookies in a container, place them in a larger box filled with Styrofoam bits, plastic bubble sheets, crumped newspaper, or other airy filler to cushion the goodies inside from bumps and knocks.
As you can see in the picture I took from the grocery store, the cookies are in tough plastic boxes to secure the cookies.

What is your favorite kind of cookie? What is a technique you use to store cookies? Do you like soft or crunchy cookies?

  1. Hey Jade!!
I really like your blogs and I think you are doing a good job on them. Answering your question, I would probably prefer pumpkin spice cookies over any other but I mean all cookies are good and I would eat any kind. I usually store my cookies in these little plastic containers (if I make them myself) for them to stay soft. When making cookies at home the come out from the oven soft but then they become very hard. For cookies that are store bought I keep them in their original package so they remain the same. I prefer soft cookies over crunchy. From personal experience I think keeping cookies in special/specific packaging because they preserve the freshness and in general makes them better. And to close everything of, what is your favorite cookie?

    1. Hi Karina!
First of all, thank you for the praises. I have never tried pumpkin spice cookies but I would love to try them some time! If you want the cookies to be not that soft, try to look for dark edges on the sides but not over cooking it to the middle of cookie. I also personally love soft and chewy cookies. My favorite kind of cookies are practically any kind! Thank you again for commenting on my blog! :)

  2. Hi Jade! This information is really useful for bakers. To answer your question, my favorite cookie would have to be chocolate chip cookies because it is simple, it has chocolate and it melts in my mouth when the cookies are still warm. A technique I use to store cookies is putting them in a sealed tight Ziploc bag so that I could eat them throughout the week. To me, I like cookies that are soft and chewy! :)

  3. Hi Jade! i have enjoyed your blog posts and i find them to be very informative. To answer your question i kind of enjoy a bit of both; crunchy cookies go well with a glass a glass of milk and the soft and chewy ones are very tasteful when the chocolate melts in your mouth. The technique i use to store soft cookies would be to put them in a ziploc bag and put them in to a sealed container that way the freshness is kept in side.
