All the New Joy of Cooking

Cooking is way we can represent ourselves. It can represent our lifestyles and culture. The book not only provides recipes for meals, it also provides essential cooking basics at a glance: washing and storing salad greens, selecting a pasta and a matching sauce, and determining when a piece of fish is cooked through.

This book is really about what we can do to be healthy by having freshness, convenience, and healthy food in our fridge or pantry. Reviews state "An essential cookbook" (Martha Stewart Living). "For millions of Americans, the Joy of Cooking is a beloved kitchen companion, a friendly source of advice on everything from how to roast a chicken to a recipe for the best brownie ever" (Los Angeles Times).

Each chapter is organized on type of food it is. An example is fruits. In the fruits chapter, I learned how to shop for fresh fruits, prepare fruits, and cook fruits. There are many rules that can help you preserve fruits from rotting.

I now know that in November, the fruits that are in season are cranberries, mandarins, persimmons, and quinces. I also gained the knowledge of trying to leave the peels on the fruit while eating. However, only do this if you know the fruit is organically made.

What do you to preserve your fruits? Are you going to choose healthy? If so, what are you going to do maintain a healthy diet?

  1. Can you share some of the specific tips that you learned about selecting fresh produce? I always try to eat fruits/vegetables and then protein/grains. I also try to drink a lot of water each day to be healthy.

    1. Yes. The trick of about selecting fruit produce is you have to try to buy fruit grown organically, if possible. It is best if you buy fruits in their domestic season. In this book, it states, "Produce is most reasonable in price when plentiful, nutrition is greatest when fruits have not traveled for long, and flavor is riches when fruits reach the peak of their reproductive cycle" (Becker 439). Also, when selecting fresh produce, you want to look for the fruits that are bright, plump, and sound. In some stores, fruits can have been waxed, and sprayed. That is why you have to check when that fruit is seasonal grown or wash the fruit thoroughly until the serving time, not before and certainly not after. Fruit/ vegetables, proteins/grains, and also water are also a very good healthy choice to make.

  2. Hey Jade!!
First of all, fruits are probably one of my favorite foods to eat-- they are delicious! Finding new ways to cook and use them in meals is always exciting for me especially since they aren't always good-tasting foods to begin with.
Personally, I find that being propelled and excited about finding new ways to prepare, cook, and store healthy foods helps to promote a healthy lifestyle. While fruits are known to be high in sugars, they are still good in proportion, and go well along with veggies and protein.
My favorite way to include fruits and veggies is through smoothies. I found that Kale is packed with powerful antioxidants, is high in fiber, and is great to put in smoothies without even noticing it's there! Like Kale, many foods have beneficial properties in them that are super important to consume when trying to eat healthy to achieve that healthy lifestyle.

Thanks for sharing some insight on fruits and veggies!! :)

  3. Hey Jade! To answer your questions: I actually already eat pretty healthy as my family buys all organic ingredients, as much as possible that is, and we love eating fruits! I've never actually tried anything to preserve fruits before, so do you have any tips for preserving apples longer?
I find the best way to eat healthy is by finding those organic and healthy foods that you actually enjoy, especially if your a picky eater. As Mackenzie mentioned smoothies above, they are definitely my favorite way to get the fiber and natural sugar from fruits and vegetables. However, during the winter it's hard to find many of the summer fruits like berries, so do you have any suggestions of winter fruit that are healthy and delicious?
    Thank you!
