The shoes of an outfit is very important. Though they are literally at the bottom of an outfit, simply they are just as important as any other parts of the outfit. There are many shoes for different occasions; formal, casual, sports, and simply for comfort. I am going to tell you the two most common formal shoes in today's fashion.
The Oxford Shoe: Is the most common formal men's shoes in today's fashion, for formal events it is usually in a solid black color but "The plain cap oxford lace-up is the basic shoe style for smart, though not strictly formal, town wear" (Flusser 193). So it can be worn in more upper-style casual wear as well.
The Dress Slip-On:In today's fashion this shoe is formal; though not as formal as the oxfords. But this shoe is the most comfortable, "But with current men's fashion fueled by convenience and comfort, the slip-on nowadays enjoys an equal footing with the lace-up for tailored business clothes" (Flusser 196).
Tip/advise: When you're wearing your shoes there is a general rule of thumb that the color of your shoes matches the color of your accessories such as your belt (including your watch if the wrist band is leather/suede). Also wear black socks, dark colored socks are fine, and generally stay away from wearing neon colored and white socks.

I would say that shoes are a definite top 3 most important part of an outfit if not the most important. They provide an aspect of fashion that cannot be achieved by pants or jackets. They are typically more creative and can be designed an infinite amount of ways. Different shoes can always take on new designs of the generic type. While with jackets and pants, they always have to resemble somewhat of the generic jacket and pants. I also believe that with all the hype about sneakers today with what Nike and Adidas has been doing, they are becoming more and more of a factor in how trendy someone is.
