The Lynch Flip-Flap

In soccer you must need to be able to move swiftly and effeciently on and off the ball especially as an attacking player. Being able to do this requires a lot of movement around the ball like scissors or step overs for example helps players become comfortable and helps with movement around the ball. As you master these skills you start to combine similar moves into one being more "cheeky"with the ball.

A great example is the Lynch Flip-Flap. "Approach the defender face on, then simply step over the ball, while tapping it forward with your trailing leg" (F2 56) . This is when step over get into the trick, so already knowing this move helps you combine a lot faster and easier. "Then quickly flip your standing foot outwards to take the ball wide of your opponent" (F2 56). "You will be past him before he can count to three" (F2 56).

Applying these moves together will leave your defender in the dust, but remember you may not perfect it at first but on the other hand there is no such thing as perfect... So trying again and again makes better!
Step Over the ball

Tap the ball forward with the inside of your other foot

Now tap the ball away with the same foot you stepped over with

Is dribbling skills important just for attacking players?

  1. I have seen that skill used and I think that the flip-flap is a very useful and important skill to learn and use. To answer your question however, I believe that dribbling skills are not just important for attacking players but for all players on the field. Midfielders deal with dribbling, and one on ones, and potentially have more opportunities than strikers. The defenders and goalies will probably have a lot less opportunities to dribble, but they still need to know how to get around pressuring offense from the other team.

  2. Hi Richi, I do not play soccer but I do like to watch soccer games on the weekends. I do think that not just attacking players need to know at least some dribbling skills. For example, midfielders need dribbling skills for one-on-ones in the midfield and to be able to bring up the ball and deliver it to the strikers. To add on, the defenders and goalies need some skills to make sure they can get out of tight situations and not just give up the ball to the opposing player and leave the situation safely. When I’m not watching soccer on the weekends I spend my time watching football every Sunday. While you don’t dribble in football, you do need great hand-eye coordination to be able to throw the ball to the correct place and catch the ball offensively. Defensively, you also need good hand-eye coordination to be able to read the ball and be able to deflect the ball and create incompletions and turnovers for their team. Thus, everyone on the field should know at least the basic dribbling skills so they can get out of pressure or move up with the ball just like football players should have good hand-eye coordination to help their team. It’s also very important to have good hand-eye coordination in soccer which is another skill soccer players can use to move up with the ball!
