A Dancer's Guide to Stronger Glutes

In order to execute dance moves well, dancers need strength in all parts of their body. Strength in your glutes is an essential part in being able to complete certain technique moves, like turns and leaps. When completing these moves, you need to tighten your butt muscles to hep with balance and stability. If you don't have enough strength in this part of your body, the move you're trying to complete won't work as well.

The following exercise is another one I learned in physical therapy. It is called a "Bent leg glute raise" (ATI, 12). To do this exercise, first you need to get on your hands and knees, making sure that you're keeping your head aligned with your back and your hips square. Next, lift one of your legs up towards the side wall. While doing this, your leg should be bent (ATI, 12). Look below for an example. This exercise has helped me improve my ability to do more turns and get higher in my leaps.

In order to do this exercise correctly, “Make sure you are on a hard, flat surface” (ATI, 12). This will help you keep your body even to get the most out of it. Make sure to keep the correct form to prevent injury.

Why do you think glute muscles help with stability and balance?

  1. Hello Kenzee. I find your blog post very interesting and believe that is very well written and structured fully and completely. Your understanding about dancing seems strong and successful. I believe that I can connect idea that in one of my blog posts called “how to stay healthy by Stretching.” It is about having the right mindset to staying healthy through stretching. I can connect to your blog post, “A dancers guide to strong glutes” by supporting the fact that Technique and stretching is key to preforming a stretch correctly. When you state, “strength in the goods is a sensual part in being able to complete certain technique moves.” This develops me to Think of a message that if you preform an exercise/stretch correctly it will be a successful threat on your body. If preformed not correctly, it can develop issues like tearing and fracturing of a muscle. That is how our to blog post can connect. One question for you would be, before you perform any dance move do you always need to stretch? Why?

    1. Thank you! Stretching is an essential part of working out and maintaining flexibility which goes hand in hand with strength. It is very important to stretch before you dance because if your muscles are too tight and you try to complete a technical move such as a kick, you could tear something. However, if you are just running through a dance, not going full out, then it is okay to not stretch full out either.

  2. Glute muscles are to the lower body what abs are to the upper body: they are a primary muscle and HUGE. They help to maintain strength through the core region which is essential in all athletic movements.

    1. I completely agree! Your glutes, hips, back and core are all connected and work together to help your body function correctly when doing athletics.
